IN FOCUS: Milligan student accepted into prestigious South African performing arts program11.18.2005
MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN — Milligan College junior Zoey Phelps has been accepted into C-Kruis, a prestigious South African performing arts and educational training company. C-Kruis show teams travel throughout South Africa presenting youth weeks and energetic performing arts performances aimed at teens and young adults. Founded in 1995, C-Kruis features two performing arts companies (Reds and Blues) consisting of 49 artists each.
Phelps has worked with Milligan College faculty to earn academic credit for her participation in the performing team. "I approached some of my professors and asked if they would be willing to support this opportunity as independent courses and internships," Phelps said. "They were all more then willing to work with me and were genuinely excited about this opportunity."
Phelps is one of just 10 chosen to be a part of the 2006 international C-Kruis team. As a member of the C-Kruis performance team, Phelps will be involved on stage in dance, drama, experimental theatre and musical productions.
To qualify for acceptance into the company, Phelps had to undergo an elaborate screening and audition process. "The audition process was exhausting," said Phelps. "I was asked to demonstrate my skills in dancing, singing, acting, painting, drawing and technical stage work. I then interviewed in front of a five person panel of judges for over an hour."
Phelps, a psychology major, is originally from Nashville, Indiana, and began dancing at age three. She later progressed into acting where she participated in various theatres throughout the country. Phelps began singing at age nine and has participated in various district and state vocal competitions.
She has been active in the theatre department at Milligan College participating in both Footloose and Oklahoma! She also served as choreographer of the children's workshop production of Fishtales and the One Act-Gershwin Revue. Phelps also serves as choreographer for several Science Hill High School productions in Johnson City, Tennessee.
