An Annotated Bibliography and Reference List of Musical Fiction Published08.03.2005
MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN — A lifelong passion for reading and music has culminated in a recent publication for Dr. Kellie Brown, chair of the music department at Milligan College.
Her book, An Annotated Bibliography and Reference List of Musical Fiction, was recently published by Edwin Mellen Press, one of the country's most respected academic publishers.
"This project was really a labor of love," says Brown. "It began about 10 years ago when I discovered a historical fiction series about a violinist living in Nazi Germany. After reading this series, I began to search new and used bookstores, and finally online retailers, for more musical fiction."
About five years ago, Brown's collection and research had grown to the extent that she was ready to compile her work into a reference book. Fortunately, Edwin Mellen Press agreed that this was an important topic that needed to be made available to librarians, musicians and educators.
Focusing on novels mainly from the 20th century, the volume contains an extensive annotated list featuring works for adult, young adult and juvenile audiences and also represents a wide range of musical genre, from classical to jazz to rap.
The book provides a comprehensive listing of all titles sorted by reading level and by musical genres to assist in finding the precise book for a given need or interest.
Many educators have already praised the book.
"Dr. Brown's book is a wonderful contribution to the study of music and literature and should be proved invaluable to the music librarian, music researcher, and student of literature," said John R. Gibbs, the assistant head of the music library at the University of Washington.
Brown currently serves as chair of the music department and director of the strings program at Milligan College. She also conducts the Milligan College orchestra.
