30 'faces' of Bristol Public Library in exhibit

April 16 – May 7, 2021 @ Tipton Gallery

JOHNSON CITY, TN — The East Tennessee State University Department of Art & Design and Slocumb Galleries present “Tennessee Daze Inn II” from April 16 to May 7 at the Tipton Gallery curated by Jeff Kinzel. There will be a Virtual Artists Talk April 28, from 5 to 7 p.m. via ZOOM ID 710 908 4999; an open house to see the works in person with some of the vaccinated artists is also scheduled on May 7, First Friday from 6 to 8 p.m.

Curator Jeff Kinzel narrates the progression of the exhibition starting with his purchase of “30 framed photographs of the Bristol Public Library found in a thrift store,” which he distributed “to 30 artists—all working in different styles and media. He invited them “to reconstitute the pictures into something else,” and the result are 30 distinct works of art that are now in the Tennessee Daze Inn II exhibition.

Kinzel added, “these pieces were all created in early 2020, just before COVID-19 hit the world; strangely, a number of them seem to foresee the coming of a viral invasion — whether biological or technological.” The public is invited to view the dynamic collection of work as “each of the artists inDaze Innbrought something unique to this playful challenge, and these works are the compelling results.”

The participating artists are Ken Abbott, Julie Armbruster, Eric Baden, Jane Broderick, Julyan Davis, Glen English, Barbara Fisher, Mark Flowers, Cyrus Glance, Lyn Govette, Travis Graves, Perla Haney-Jardine, Jeff Kinzel, Mary Knight, Chuck Krekelberg, Vanessa Mayoraz, William Price, Michael Robinson, Andrew Scott Ross, David Skinner, Martha Skinner, Lisa Smith, Rachel Stack, Tema Stauffer, Peter Thorpe, Valeria Watson and Robert Zimmerman.
