Mustache You a Question Exhibit on display at the Southwest Virginia Museum

September 2–25, 2020 @ Southwest Virginia Museum

BIG STONE GAP, VA. The Southwest Virginia Museum Historical State Park announces ”I Mustache You a Question,” a new rotating exhibit featuring mustache cups and saucers plus shaving items from the museum’s collections.

Mustache cups became very popular in the latter part of the 19thcentury, when almost every Victorian male sported a mustache. These elegant tea and coffee cups included a delicate ledge insert to help protect the elaborate facial hair fashionable at the time. The “I Mustache You a Question” exhibit show cases cups and saucers of Limoges porcelain that date back to the 1880s. You can also view a 1887 photo of the 91 members of the Virginia House of Delegates, only one of which is clean-shaven.

The exhibit opened Friday, Aug. 21, and will run through Friday, Sept. 25. The exhibit can be viewed in the Victorian parlor of the museum during normal operating hours: Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.; Sunday, 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. Regular admission rates apply. Adults $5, Children 6-12 $3, under 6 free. Group rates are available.

Participants are required to social distance between those not in the same household. Face coverings are required if you enter the museum.
