An afternoon of organ music is performed

Stephen Hamilton performs Sunday, Feb. 15 at 4 p.m., at Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church, Johnson City Tennessee.

For more than four decades, Hamilton has been a leading presence on the American and international organ scene. Critically acclaimed by The New York Times for his powerful and insightful performances, Hamilton has appeared in many of the world’s most celebrated venues, including Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, Westminster Abbey, and St. Paul’s Cathedral in London, as well as major cathedral and concert settings throughout the United States.

Hamilton is minister of music emeritus at the historic Church of the Holy Trinity in New York City, where he served for many years as organist, conductor and artistic director of a nationally recognized concert series. A respected educator, he has held faculty positions at institutions including the Manhattan School of Music and has been a frequent clinician for the American Guild of Organists. Although originally born in Iowa, Hamilton has local ties to our region. He was professor of organ and chairman of the fine arts division at Virginia Intermont College in Bristol, Virginia, from 1972 to 1986.

Hamilton began his private organ studies in the fourth grade with Russell Saunders at Drake University. His bachelor’s and master’s degrees were earned at Southern Illinois University. His study with John Walker earned him the Doctor of Musical Arts at the Manhattan School of Music. He also pursued rigorous private studies with legendary organists Arthur Poister and Marie-Claire Alain.

He makes his home in Minneapolis, where he is actively engaged in the cul-tural life of the Twin Cities, while continuing to concertize internationally.

At Munsey Church, Hamilton performs works by Reger, Pasquini, Valente, J.S. Bach, Franck and Ginastera, showcasing the rich tonal resources of the R. A. Colby pipe organ.

For over 80 years, The R.A. Colby Pipe Organ Builders have worked closely with clients to turn vision into lasting sound. Their approach is rooted in open dialogue, meticulous craftsmanship and a shared passion for excellence. The company, which is located just down the street from Munsey Church in Johnson City, Tennessee, has organ installations all over the U.S.

Admission to the concert is free, and will begin at 4 p.m. The event is held at Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church.
