Artist Supports Bristol's Outdoor Sculpture Despite Vandalism

November 20, 2006

Catherine Murray, sculptor of "Extraction of Arrows" in the 2006 Art in Public Places competition, expresses her continuing support for Bristol's outdoor sculpture program in a Letter to the Editor, reprinted here from the Bristol Herald Courier.

Bristol's downtown sculpture program should continue

When talking to your reporter about the repairs made to my sculpture after it was damaged by vandals, I made it a point to express support for the outdoor sculpture exhibition program in downtown Bristol. Unfortunately, these sentiments were not included in the article.

In spite of my personal experience, which was the result of some random stupidity, I think it is wonderful that Bristol is forward thinking in its support of public sculpture.

What happened to my piece was discouraging, but can hopefully lead to the consideration of some issues that are important in the display of outdoor sculpture. These include sufficient lighting and the support of businesses in the vicinity of displayed work.

Ultimately, and hopefully, my experience, initially so frustrating, will end up contributing to the conversation about public art in Bristol and help to strengthen this already wonderful program!
