Arts for Youth — Students win Christmas Card Contest

November 28, 2018

The Sullivan County Tennessee School System holds an annual Christmas Card Art Contest for its students. The winning cards are used as the system’s holiday card to be sent to their Christmas list.

“This is the second year for the Christmas Card Art contest,” says Kristi King, secretary to the director of schools and board of education. “Our office has always sent Christmas cards to neighboring school systems, community leaders, etc. So instead of purchasing store bought cards, Mrs. Rafalowski (director of schools) wanted to send cards created by our students, so she decided to hold a contest.

“Our Central Office staff judges the artwork. This year we received 90 entries. The winners are recognized at our December board meeting and will receive a copy of the card, a matted print of their artwork, and a small prize from Mrs. Rafalowski.

“Art teachers are informed of the contest, and students can choose any theme they like for the cards. It’s fun to see what different things each grade level comes up with. We have some really good artists in our school district.”

This year’s Elementary School winner are Jax Brown, Holston, fourth grade; Campbell Skinner, Miller Perry, third grade; Canon Slagle, Bluff City, second grade. Middle school winners are Kyndl Hodge, Mary Hughes, sixth grade; Konner Mercer, Holston Valley, eighth grade; Tamia Fletcher, Blountville, seventh grade. High school winners are Tyler Smith, East, 12th grade and Becky Bernard, South, tenth grade.
