Bestselling author Maggie Stiefvater visits Abingdon

September 29, 2025

The acclaimed author Maggie Stiefvater, celebrated for her bestselling fantasy novels and vibrant storytelling, visits Abingdon, Virginia, for two events Oct. 18 and 19. The events are sponsored by the Friends of the Washington County Public Library as part of their Sunday with Friends writers’ series.

Stiefvater, noted for her young adult works such as “The Raven Cycle,” “The Scorpio Races” and “Shiver,” has captivated millions of readers worldwide with her blend of myth, magic and emotionally resonant characters.

She meets with her young audience Saturday, Oct. 18 at 1 p.m. at the Abingdon library. She discusses where the ideas for her young adult fantasy series came from and interacts with the audience.

This summer Stiefvater published “The Raven Boys: A Graphic Novel” as well as her first adult novel, “The Listeners,” which became a national bestseller.

A work of historical fiction, “The Listeners” is set during World War II, where a luxury hotel in West Virginia is transformed into a holding facility for captured Axis diplomats. The fictional hotel is similar to the actual use of the Greenbrier Hotel in White Sulphur Springs which was purchased by the U.S. Government for an internment camp and hospital during the war

The story centers on June Hudson, the hotel’s general manager and a local Appalachian woman, who must navigate the complexities of hosting the diplomats while facing the challenges of wartime and the watchful eyes of the FBI. The novel blends historical events with elements of magical realism, exploring themes of luxury, loyalty and the hidden depths of human nature.

Stiefvater discusses her literary career, especially her new novel “The Listeners,” Sunday, Oct. 19, at 3 p.m. at the Abingdon library.

Known for her vivid prose and deeply imaginative worlds, Stiefvater’s novels have been translated into over 30 languages and have consistently earned critical acclaim. She is also an accomplished visual artist and musician, often weaving those creative pursuits into her writing process. Her ability to connect with audiences — both on the page and in person — has made her a beloved figure on the international literary scene.

The Friends of the Washington County Public Library is a volunteer, non-profit organization whose purpose is to help strengthen the resources of the library and to make it a dynamic force in the community.

The event is free of charge. There will be refreshments as well as book sales and signings after the events.
