Bristol Music Club holds scholarship benefit in Bristol

October 31, 2018

The Bristol Music Club holds its annual Scholarship Benefit Saturday, Nov. 10, beginning at 10 a.m. at Central Presbyterian Church, Bristol, Tennessee. As in past years, special guests and former scholarship winners provide the program, along with fashions from Donna Cox at The Galleria. There is a silent auction, and guests enjoy refreshments, fashions and music.

Singers selected from the Highlands Youth Ensemble perform as special guests. The Highlands Youth Ensemble, conducted by Jane DeLoach Morison, is the Mountain Empire Children’s Choral Academy’s select choir for high school singers. The Highlands Youth Ensemble performs a wide range of choral repertoire in several annual concerts throughout the Tri-Cities area, and also sings every Christmas with the Symphony of the Mountains and at the Biltmore Estate.

Bristol Music Club Scholarship winner Natalie Lugo performs on cello. The daughter of Ralph and Dawn Lugo, she is a homeschooled senior from Jonesborough, Tennessee. She is a cello student of Wesley Baldwin of the University of Tennessee and a voice student of Rachel Helton. She is honored to be a seven-time prizewinner of the Bristol Music Club Scholarship Auditions, including three first-place awards. An aspiring music educator and choral conductor, Lugo is a soprano section leader in the Highlands Youth Ensemble. This past February, she was selected for the American Choral Directors Association Southern Region Senior High Honor Choir.

Also performing is pianist Emily Cai, student of Carol Stone. She is a sophomore at Dobyns-Bennett High School. She was the Division III first-place winner in the Bristol Music Club’s scholarship competition in 2018. She received superior ratings in the Tennessee Music Teachers Association state auditions for three years. She received Honorable Mention in the Carmel Klavier International competition. Cai was among the winners of the Brooklyn Music Teachers Guild Intercontinental Piano Competition and performed in the Winner’s Recital at Steinway Hall in New York City in October.

Amy Shi performs on piano. She won the Honorable Mention award in Division III of the 2018 Bristol Music Club Scholarship Auditions. She studies piano with Connie Wurster and is the daughter of Zhongshou Shi and Qiooxia Shen. Shi is a ninth grade student at Bristol Tennessee High School. In 2016 she received the Don Davis Award in Band. Last July Shi performed in the Young Artist Concert 2018.

Tickets for the Scholarship Benefit are $25 and are available at the door or from any member of the Bristol Music Club. For more information, call Judy Dowe at 276-669-8509.
