RICHLANDS, Va. -- The 32nd Anniversary Season of Citizens for the Arts opens on Aug. 26.

CART recently received funds from the Credit Bureau of Virginia Foundation to assist with its mission of providing the region with top notch entertainment. Danny Coulthart, board of director of the foundation, and Jimmy Welch, executive director, presented a sponsorship check to Vickie England, president of CART.

Performances will be held at Richlands Middle School auditorium unless otherwise noted in the schedule.

"The Comedy Ventriloquism of Lynn Trefzger" (Aug. 26, 3 p.m.) spotlights this self-taught ventriloquist who brings together figures, manipulation and exceptional vocal skills to create a comedy act for all ages.

Le Hotclub De Biglick (Sept. 18, 7 p.m.) heralds back to the 1930's style of music became popular known as "Gypsy Jazz" That type of music was made famous by guitarist Django Reinhardt and violinist Stephane Grappelli. Today this music is kept alive by this Roanoke, Va., group.

"Skippyjon Jones" (Oct. 20, 6 p.m.) wants to be the best Chihuahua ever, but he's a Siamese cat. Skippyjon's wild imagination takes over and he becomes El Skippito Bandito, the greatest canine sword fighter in Mexico. The new musical is based on the best-selling book by Judy Schachner.

"Junie B. Jones" (Nov. 10, 6 p.m.) is finally graduating from kindergarten and is ready for first grade, at last! But getting use to a whole new group of friends, a new teacher and new glasses is challenging. Follow her adventures as she writes everything down in her journal.

"A Little Princess Christmas" (Nov. 27, 6 p.m.) is a story of triumph of a young girl who loses everything but her kindness and imagination. The original musical is based on Frances Hodgson Burnett's classic novel.

Night Crossing (Dec. 16, 3 p.m.), a Celtic band, has eclectic tastes, performing traditional Irish and Scottish fiddle tunes, ballads and pub songs.

"Laura Ingalls Wilder" (Jan. 20, 3 p.m.), one of America's most beloved authors, shines brightly in ArtsPower's heartfelt musical about the pioneerin' adventures of Laura Ingalls and her loving family as they search for the perfect little house they can call home.

"Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day" (Feb. 9, 3 p.m.) is the story of a boy who wakes up with gum in his hair, he trips on a skateboard, and then he accidentally drops his sweater in the sink – all before breakfast.

"The Marvelous Wonderettes" (Feb. 16, 7 p.m.) takes the audience to the 1958 Sprigfield High School prom where they meet the Wonderettes – four girls with hopes and dreams as big as their crinoline skirts and voices to match the renditions of classic 1950's songs.

Virginia Virtuosi (March 3, 3 p.m.) incorporates classical, contemporary and popular music in to its program of chamber music.

Highlands Ballet Company (March 24, 3 p.m.) will perform at the Southwest Virginia Community College's Mary W. Lawson Auditorium, in Richlands. Highlands' original ballet brings to life the story of Robin Hood, a heroic outlaw in English folklore.

Arts in Education Series

"Hansel and Gretel," Missoula Children's Theatre Residency, Oct. 1-6. Performances Oct. 6, 3 and 5:30 p.m., Richlands Middle School Auditorium, Richlands, Va. Touring children's theater will visit Richlands with sets, lights, costumes, props and make-up, everything to put on a play - except the cast. The team holds an open audition and casts 50-60 local students in kindergarten through 12th grade to perform in the production. The show is rehearsed throughout the week.
