College for Older Adults announces new term

January 27, 2026

The College for Older Adults at the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center, Abingdon, Virginia, begins its spring term of noncredit classes Feb. 17 and runs through March 20. Special single-session classes are offered on Mondays beginning Feb. 23. Interested individuals can register for classes online at swcenter.edu/COA.

The program is open to individuals age 50 and older. A $40 enrollment fee provides access to all scheduled classes during the spring term.

“It is education for the joy of learning,” says Ed Morgan, College for Older Adults coordinator. “We don’t focus on taking roll, quizzes or term papers.”

Spring course offerings cover a range of subjects, including literature, travel, art, history, technology, health and philosophy.

Technology courses geared to seniors cover Introduction to Computing and Cell Phone Basics. The Natural Heritage series covers moths, beavers, endangered species and other topics.

There are opportunities for personal expression with classes on acting, storytelling, creative writing and gardening. Hear first-hand travel stories of globetrotting adventures in Peru, England and Borneo.

Monday special topic classes include a presentation by Virginia Tech Climatologist (and Abingdon native) Craig Ramseyer on the weather factors that produced Hurricane Helene and the increasing danger that severe thunderstorms pose for the Appalachian region.

Alice Sebrell, director of the Black Mountain College Museum, discusses the history and lasting cultural impact of the experimental North Carolina institution. Chair Yoga and Self Defense for Seniors is offered on Mondays.
