Connections: VMFA Artmobiles

December 28, 2009

In 1953 the Artmobile became the world's first mobile art gallery and toured the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) collection to hundreds of communities for more than 40 years.

Musser Warren was chair of the VMFA's Bristol chapter for approximately 20 years. She coordinated special parties and themed events in conjunction with Artmobile visits to our region. Her daughter, Merle Dickert, helped her make phone calls and address invitations to encourage schools and individuals to attend the programs.

Dickert says, "When I first stepped aboard an Artmobile, the experience left a lasting impression on me. The paintings were beautiful, and the exhibition space was air-conditioned."
