Emory & Henry Band raises school spirit

September 26, 2018

Emory & Henry College has the only marching band in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. The college band entertains crowds, boosts the football team and campus spirit and keeps school traditions alive. Its members are instrumentalists in the college’s music department. The band is directed by Matt Frederick, chair of the music department.

The program also offers color guard and winter guard.

The color guard at Emory & Henry College is a part of the marching band and music program. It is comprised of marching band members who add visual impact and color to the musical performance that combines equipment work with dancing and marching. During the winter program, the guard continues to master their equipment skills and learn more difficult choreography.

Almost 10 percent of the student body at E&H participates in the marching band program, and the band has accepted an invitation to march in the 2020 New Years Day parade in Rome, Italy. In addition to the marching band, the band program is made up of a symphonic band, brass ensemble, woodwind ensemble, brass quintet and trumpet ensemble. Recently the band program moved into its own facility, a 6,400 square foot rehearsal hall dedicated to advancing the band program at Emory & Henry College.
