ETSU Folklife Films Reissued Online

JOHNSON CITY, TN -- Folkstreams, a Web site that makes significant folk cultural films more widely accessible, has just announced the addition to its catalog of a group of short documentaries produced at East Tennessee State University in the 1970s by Tom Burton and the late Jack Schrader. These important Appalachian folklife films have not been available for decades.

A portrayal of the life and musical career of New Orleans banjo and guitar jazzman Emanuel 'Manny' Sayles, a man whose musical career has in many ways followed the development of American jazz itself. Also features Papa John Creach, Edmund Washington, and the Kid Thomas Band.

-- Edd Presnell: Dulcimer Maker
Edd Presnell, a mountain craftsman and native of Watauga County, N. C., demonstrates and comments on the construction of a dulcimer. Presnell learned his craft from his father-in-law. Film includes a brief performance on a finished dulcimer by his wife, Nettie.

-- Buna and Bertha: Ballad Singers
Performance of and commentary on Anglo-American ballads and songs by 86 and 92 year old mountain women, Buna Hicks of Beech Creek and Bertha Baird of Rominger in Western North Carolina.
