November 26, 2014

East Tennessee State University, Johnson City, named Mira Gerard chair of the department
of art and design in the college of arts and sciences.

Gerard is an associate professor in the department. She teaches undergraduate and
graduate courses in painting as well as interdisciplinary graduate seminars.

"Our faculty is made up of award-winning artists and art historians who are active in
their research and who publish and exhibit regularly in regional, national and international
museums, galleries and publications," Gerard says, adding that studies in art prepare students
for the critical thinking and creativity needed in a variety of careers.

The department also hosts numerous public exhibitions, artist lectures and other cultural
events, and enjoys partnerships with various departments on campus as well as ETSU's Mary
B. Martin School of the Arts, the Reece Museum, Nelson Fine Art, the Urban Redevelopment
Alliance and the Johnson City Area Arts Council.

A painter, writer, performer and video artist, Gerard has exhibited her work in numerous solo and group exhibitions both nationally and internationally, including this year's "Red Clay Survey" at the Huntsville (Ala.) Museum of Art and a recent solo exhibition, "Two-Way Dream," at the William King Museum in Abingdon, Va. Her award-winning paintings have been selected for publication in numerous journals and magazines.

She has curated several group exhibitions, including "Remote Viewing" at Curating Contemporary online and "The Ghost in You" at Gallery 304 in New York. Her own recent work includes an interactive performance art piece, "Memories, Dreams, Obsessions,"
which took place at the second International Zizek Studies Conference. She had a solo
exhibition, "Endless Winter," at Piedmont College's Project Room gallery in Atlanta, Georgia.
