The Metropolitan Knoxville Airport Authority (McGhee Tyson Airport) and the Arts & Culture Alliance of Greater Knoxville present "Arts in the Airport," a new exhibition featuring selected artwork from 45 artists in the East Tennessee region, including Beverly Thomas Jenkins of Jonesborough, Tenn.
"Arts in the Airport" was developed to allow regional artists to compete and display work in the most visited site in the area. The selected art features contemporary 2- and 3-dimensional artwork and is exhibited in the secured area behind McGhee Tyson Airport's security gate checkpoint through October 8. The exhibition is normally available for viewing only by visitors flying in or out of the airport. Otherwise, artists and their guests may view the exhibition by appointment with Metropolitan Knoxville Airport Authority staff. Contact Becky Huckaby, director of Public Relations, at (865) 342-3014.
Juror Jeffrey Morton, Professor of Art at Covenant College in Lookout Mountain, Ga., provided this statement about the exhibition: "At times an encounter with an art work is similar to an encounter with someone from our distant past. We have a vague recognition that we know that person, but the reality is we do so only in our memory, always uncertain if our memory is clear or not. In this sense artworks function like far off relatives or friends - they represent pieces of our memory of things we have seen, or things we have experienced, but they do so at arms length. While we look at a work of art wondering if we have seen that thing before, the works in this exhibition help us recall those memories of people, places and things we think we cherish and love."
"The Arts in the Airport program has allowed the airport to showcase some of the region's most talented artists, and this new exhibition is no exception," said Howard Vogel, chairman of the Metropolitan Knoxville Airport Authority's Board of Commissioners. "It is a great honor to continue to provide East Tennessee travelers with artwork that is inspirational and reflective of our region's culture."
