Community Christmas concert benefits Abingdon residents

November 26, 2019

Community Christmas announces that the 25th annual Community Christmas program ushers in the holidays Dec. 11, at 7 p.m. at Barter Theatre in Abingdon, Virginia. The program was started in 1993 by Jim and Jennifer Ferreira and Abingdon friends to help raise funds for Christmas turkeys to make the holidays a bit more special for those in need. The program has grown and become an annual event that brings meaning to the holiday season for so many in our community. The program continues to grow and always offers an evening full of lively entertainment for all ages by bringing music, dance and storytelling to the Barter stage.

This year’s show, “Merry Up,” provides festive entertainment for the 25th anniversary program. The show spotlights a long list of talented area performers. Both new entertainers as well as past favorites donate their talent and time to support this special fundraising event.

Last year over 750 turkey and ham gift certificates as well as monetary support were provided to many area groups, including Faith in Action, Washington County Social Services, Salvation Army, Meals on Wheels, Healthy Families-Farm Families and others. Community Christmas also provides funds for the Annual Community Christmas dinner which is held Dec. 24 at Abingdon United Methodist Church. Last year this Christmas Dinner provided more than 1,000 meals to those in need.

Performers for this year’s event include Eugene Wolfe, The Brother Boys, Momma Molasses, The Ladybirds, Lightnin’ Charlie, Fire in the Kitchen, The Bailey Mountain Cloggers, Dr. William Handy and Friends, Sandra Parker, Emory & Henry Grace Notes, Adam Bolt, Emory & Henry Choristers and others.

Tickets are $10 per person and are available through the Barter Theatre Box Office by calling 276-628-3991. Consider bringing a new toy to donate to Toys for Tots or canned goods for Faith in Action.
