Milligan adds majors in music business and economics

February 3, 2014

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN - Milligan College continues to expand its academic programs and opportunities by announcing the addition of two new majors―music business and economics―set to begin in fall 2014.

These new majors follow the college's other recent additions of majors in computer science and social work.

The music business major is divided into two tracks―business and technical.

"This new major gives our students the chance to gain valuable training in an applied music concentration as well as the technical or business expertise that is required to succeed in the fast-moving world of the contemporary music business," said Dr. R. Garland Young, vice president for academic affairs and dean.

Students in both tracks will spend a semester studying at Nashville's Contemporary Music Center, hosted by the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities.

"As a part of this major, students will have a chance to work within the very hub of the music business in Nashville," Young said. "Students will work closely with other students in a semester-long experience that involves study, intense hands-on experiences with modern equipment and facilities, and a weeklong musical tour.

"Combine this experience with the liberal arts approach to learning at Milligan, and the new program will produce students who are deep thinkers and who possess the skillset required to succeed in a highly competitive area of business."

In addition, Milligan announced it will expand its successful economics minor into a major.

According to job market data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, a bachelor's degree in economics can lead to professions such as an economist, postsecondary teacher, budget analyst, financial analyst and loan officer.

The economics major will contain a significant amount of finance and accounting to prepare students for careers in business.

"Therefore, this major allows students the flexibility to either enter the workforce directly after graduation or pursue graduate school in economics," Young said. "We have created a program that is both streamlined and also offers a strong mix of math, finance and economics courses."
