Two internationally renowned musicians unite Saturday, Oct. 10 at Emory & Henry University’s McGlothlin Center for the Arts, Emory, Virginia, to create a unique and energetic concept in music performance entitled, The Sound of Two Worlds: Opera Meets Rock.
Emory & Henry alumni Michael Austin and Michael Fath combine operatic and rock styles into one evening of music beginning at 7:30 p.m. in the McGlothlin Center for the Arts.
While the concept of “opera meets rock” has been explored, this collaboration presents not only the opera world’s finest arias, but American blues, rock and roll classics, R&B, spirituals and the artists’ own original compositions — all stripped down vocally and acoustically to these two performers.
For decades Austin has performed critically praised leading tenor solos and roles with the world’s most celebrated operas, including “Otello,” “La Traviata” and “Madama Butterfly,” in venues and orchestras across America, Europe, Asia and Canada. He is also one of the only African-American Otellos of his time.
Fath is an internationally and critically acclaimed rock, fusion and jazz electric and acoustic guitarist, composer, mandolinist and vocalist, with hundreds of recordings and production credits. His image has graced the covers of magazines. He was honored as Guitar Magazine’s instrumentalist of the year, and he has been elected to several Hard Rock Café Halls of Fame.
