Quilt show is on exhibit at William King Museum

April 25, 2020

Now celebrating its 40th anniversary, Quilt National ‘19 returns to the William King Museum of Art, Abingdon, Virginia. Quilt National ‘19 on loan from the Dairy Barn Arts Center in Athens, Ohio, is in the museum’s United Company-LeGard Galleries through July 12. An international juried exhibition of contemporary quilts, this biennial seeks to demonstrate the transformations taking place in the world of quilting. Its purpose in 1979 was, and still is, to carry the definition of quilting far beyond its traditional parameters and to promote quiltmaking as what it has always been — an art form.

Quilt National ’19 celebrates artists that have pushed the boundaries of traditional quiltmaking by utilizing the newest materials and technologies, while maintaining many of the traditional methods of piecing and patching. The emotionally charged works display a reverence for the lessons taught by the makers of heritage quilts, yet they also fulfill the creative need of the artist to make a uniquely individual statement.

The museum is open seven days a week: Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1-5 p.m. Admission to the museum is free.
