Student pianist takes third in international competition

JOHNSON CITY - Jianzhi Wu, a freshman at East Tennessee State University, recently took third prize at the Monolov International Piano Competition held in Garden City, New York.

Wu, who is from Ji’an City, Jiang Xi Province, China, is pursuing her bachelor of music degree at ETSU after completing her studies at the Wuhan Conservatory of Music in Wuhan, China. She is a student of Yi-Yang Chen, assistant professor of piano and music theory in the ETSU department of music, who was a member of the program faculty and gave an open talk during the event.

The classical music competition, in which contestants between the ages of 7 and 18 are encouraged to play works by Bulgarian composers, is held at the Cathedral of the Incarnation in Garden City. This year’s jury, comprised of world-renowned musicians, was led by Dr. Marc Silverman, chair of the Manhattan School of Music in New York.
