St. Paul, Va. ? The Virginia Commission for the Arts has added Neva Hamilton to its Writers in Virginia Directory. Writers who appear in the Directory must meet criteria based on publication and residence in -- or connection to -- the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Hamilton's most recent work appears in Appalachian Heritage, Appalachian Journal, Clinch Mountain Review and Jimson Weed. A novelist and award-winning poet, she is a native of Wise County, Va. She also serves as an op/ed columnist for The Coalfield Progress. Hamilton is director of public relations for an area agency on aging.
Writers listed in the Directory are available for readings or workshops. Potential sponsors, including Virginia-based nonprofit organizations, units of government and educational institutions, can apply to the Virginia Commission for the Arts for grants to compensate writers they want to host. The Commission accepts applications from sponsors throughout the year and provides up to 50 percent of the writer's fee for the event. The Commission encourages schools, universities, libraries and nonprofits to take advantage of subsidy opportunities for readings. Interested parties should visit www.arts.virginia.gov for more information.
