June 3 – September 27, 2025 @ Damascus Trail Center
“The Aftermath of Hurricane Helen on the Appalachian Trail” is on display at the DamascusTrail Center, Damascus, Virginia. An art auction benefit is also occurring,
Inspired by the Trail and its landscape for over a century, this free exhibit explores the recovery of the Appalachian Trail after Hurricane Helene.
Hurricane Helene was the largest natural disaster ever to hit the Appalachian Trail. Over 800 miles of the trail were impacted from Georgia to Virginia. Eighttrail communities were significantly damaged in Tennessee, North Carolina and Virginia. The ATC, Trail Clubs and agency partners re-established nearly all of the Trail (with a few temporary detours) from Georgia to Maine within five months of the devastation. This is an incredible achievement when you see the amount of damage the area sustained, but there is still work to be done to repair the Trail and restore its landscape.
All proceeds from the art auction support the Appalachian Trail communities of Damascus, Erwin and Hot Springs.
