Fischman Gallery announces August exhibit

August 1–31, 2025 @ Fischman Gallery

Fischman Gallery presents the work of Steve Denton during the month of August. "Watch Your Step" features political commentary, abstractsand multi-media works, all in Denton's unique modern folk style. An artist's reception takes place Friday, Aug.1, from 6:30-9 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

Activist artist Denton was born in Detroit. After graduating from high school, he moved to Bristol, Tenn., and attended King College. At school, he discovered theater and began acting in plays and doing improv comedy. After a heart attack at age 42 forced him to retire from performance arts, Steve took up two- and three-dimensional art in earnest. His modern folk-style work runs the gamut from whimsical abstracts to heavy political commentary using acrylic paints and collage techniques to get his message out.Denton calls this exhibition at Atelier 133 "Watch Your Step," after an Elvis Costello song, stating Costello has been prescient politically and a hero of the resistance.

An artist's reception is held Friday, Aug. 1, from 6:30-9 p.m. Fischman Gallery is located in Atelier 133, 133 N Commerce St, Johnson City. Regular Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Thursdayand Friday; and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.
