July 9 – August 29, 2024 @ Johnson County Center for the Arts
“Good people picking good music together," was the sentiment of musician Lisa Pope at the Johnson County Center for the Arts Pickin’ Porch Mountain Music Jam in June.
The members of the Junior Appalachian Musicians program kicked off the music at 6 p.m. The group featured JAM participants Ikia Combs on fiddle, Zane Lewis on guitar, and Cheyenne Combs on banjo. They were accompanied by a few of their JAM teachers.
Zane Lewis opened the night with the bluegrass song "Mr. Engineer." The evening was full of notable traditional classics such as "Wreck of the Ole ’97," "Two Dollar Bill," "Rollin in My Sweet Baby’s Arms"and a nicely harmonized version of "Redwood Hills."
“I always enjoy coming down here and playing music with my pickin’ buddies,” said guitar player Mike Treadway.
Some of the kids in the audience decided to beat the heat by creating art inside the Center at its Makers Space, painting and drawing with the jam as their background music.
The last group of the evening showcased Lois Dunn on guitar and Andrew Matherly on fiddle, along with a few members from other groups. Dunn, Matherly and friends played local favorites and ended the event with "Will the Circle be Unbroken," "I'll Fly Away," and finally lead the crowd in "Amazing Grace."
The Pickin’ Porch Mountain Music Jams are held on the second and fourth Tuesday of June, Julyand August. The next Jam is Tuesday, July 9 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
