The sounds of mountain music from the Caribbean trail across the mountains of Appalachiawhen musician Rick Reyes performs at Northeast State Community College Sept. 18.
His dynamic musical presentation, "Santos de Palo: Musical Ties from Appalachia to Puerto Rico," is rooted in Latin Americana, a concept that fuses Caribbean-mountain folk music with North American folk traditions such as bluegrass, countryand gospel.
It was here, listening to traditional Puerto Rican folk music, that Reyes forged his love ofJibaro– a music of the people full of wistful melodies and steeped in longing. His father bought him a guitar, and he taught himself to play. When Reyes took one of his poems and set it to music, his lifelong journey as a songwriter began.
Through this engaging and educational experience, Reyes invites audiences to embark on a journey through the rich folk traditions of the Caribbean and North America, creating a meaningful and captivating exploration of cultural unity.Performances are scheduled for 12p.m. in theAuditorium of the Students Services Centerand 3p.m. in the amphitheater on theBlountville campusnear Tri-Cities Airport. The performances are free and open to the public.
