Virginia Highlands Community College continues the Fall 2016 Arts Array Film Series in September. Show times are every Monday and Tuesday evening at 4 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. at the Abingdon Cinemall, Abingdon, Va. Admission is free for all students and staff members of Virginia Highlands Community College, Emory & Henry College, King University and Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center, including participants in the College of Older Adults who purchase an Arts Array pass. Community admission is $7.75.
"The Revenant" is on screen Sept. 5 and 6. While exploring the uncharted wilderness in 1823, legendary frontiersman Hugh Glass sustains injuries from a brutal bear attack. When his hunting team leaves him for dead, Glass must utilize his survival skills to find a way back home while avoiding natives on their own hunt. Grief-stricken and fueled by vengeance, Glass treks through the wintry terrain to track down John Fitzgerald, the former confidant who betrayed and abandoned him. Directed by Alejandro Inarritu, it won the 2016 Academy Awards for Best Directing, Cinematography and Lead Actor (Leonardo DiCaprio).
"The Dark Horse" is shown Sept. 12 and 13. In this inspiring drama based on actual events, Cliff Curtis plays Genesis Potini, a Maori speed-chess champion from New Zealand who suffers from bipolar disorder. Searching for meaning in his life, Potini decides to mentor disadvantaged children at the Eastern Knights chess club; through his work there, he finds an escape from his demons, and the youths obtain the confidence they need to compete against their more privileged opponents. Directed by James Napier Robertson.

"Anomalisa" is shown Sept. 26 and 27. From the mind behind "Being John Malkovich," "Adaptation" and "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" comes a story portrayed entirely by puppets. A lonely motivational speaker goes on a business trip to Cincinnati, where he meets an extraordinary stranger who might be able to change his negative view of life. This stop-motion-animation feature was penned by lauded screenwriter Charlie Kaufman, who also co-directs alongside Duke Johnson. David Thewlis, Tom Noonan, and Jennifer Jason Leigh provide their voices.
