Che Nunez
Che Nunez grew up around music because his grandmother was the piano player at their church. When he was older, he played the alto and baritone saxophone from sixth grade through 12th grade. He went to Dobyns-Bennett High School, where he was in concert and marching band. He also plays guitar and mandolin.
“I got to do some cool things, such as march in the Rose Parade. Now I am in my own bluegrass band with my brother and my best friends, and I wouldn’t change it for anything,” Che says.
“Music for me is my get away for a lot of the stress in my life. I love to sit around playing my guitar, mandolin or just singing in the car. Music also helped me become more outgoing. My style of music is primarily bluegrass, but I play a lot of country, and I have also played classical ensemble music.I would say my biggest influence is Doyle Lawson. The way he plays and sings has always been one of my favorites,” he says.
His band is known as Che Nunez and the Red Hill Ramblers. They started out playing in churches but now play anywhere they can — primarily in the Tri-Cities. His brother, Caleb, is the rhythm guitar player in the band.
“Music is my escape from all the stress in my life and is also just a good time for me to hang out with my best friends,” Che says.
He plans to finish his undergraduate degree in human biology with a psychology minor at King University, Bristol, Tennessee. After graduation, he plans to take a gap year to work in a hospital and apply to medical school. He plays to always play music, because it means a lot to him.
Che is the 22-year-old son of Regina and Salvador Nunez and is from Kingsport, Tennessee.
