Children's activities are part of 'Gathering in the Gap'

May 21, 2024

Big Stone Gap, VA.The “Gathering in the Gap” Music Festival, held at the Southwest Virginia Museum Historical State Park, isn’t only focused on celebrating the musical heritage and traditions of our region – but on continuing that legacy. What better way to do that than by instilling a passion for them in our youth? As part of this year’s festival, and between the hours of 12 p.m. and 4 p.m., the park will offer numerous opportunities for children to immerse themselves in music and fun.

Returning this year, and made possible by Mountain Empire Community College, the “Pint-Size Pickers” tent provides children the opportunity to engage with music in a hands-on way. Instructors from the college will be on site, with several instruments in hand, to answer questions and provide some basic instruction to even our littlest pickers. Other ongoing activities will include scavenger hunts, crafts, games, face painting, and more. Children 12 and under are admitted to the main stage event at no charge (when accompanied by a paying adult).

In addition to the special offerings for children, this year’s festival includes a songwriting competition, musical competitions, music jams, and the annual “A Stitch in Time” Quilt Show. Food and artisan vendors are also on site. The “Gathering in the Gap” Music Festival features a one-of-a-kind evening of performances by Grammy award winning artist Suzy Bogguss, whose accolades also include awards from Country Music People International and the Country Music Awards. Also featured on the main stage, well known cellist, pianist and composer Dave Eggar as well as a high energy group from Kentucky — Dark Moon Hollow.

This year’s festival is held Saturday, May 25 on the park’s grounds. “Gathering in the Gap” is a celebration of the rich tradition of old-time, Americana and bluegrass music found in Southwest Virginia. Tickets can be purchased online at www.gatheringinthegap.org, by calling the park at 276-523-1322 or be stopping by the park during regular operating hours.
