'Drifting Along the Appalachian Trail'

BOONE, N.C. -- Organizers of the Appalachian Mountain Photography Competition have announced the winners of its 2009 competition.

The winning image in the Landscape category is "Drifting Along the Appalachian Trail" by Jeff Stoner, who now lives in Kingsport, Tenn., and is a member of the A! Magazine for the Arts committee.

Here's how Stoner describes the photograph: "A section of the Appalachian Trail on the Roan Highlands winds through two conifer forests on the way from Carvers Gap to the top of Round Bald. This is one of my favorite sections of the trail and I've wanted to photograph here after a snowfall."

Eric Heistand and his image "Splash or Trash" entered in the Adventure Category took top honors receiving the designation of Best in Show and also capturing the coveted People's Choice Award.

This year marked the largest participation to date in the People's Choice Award with more than 2,500 votes cast.

The 47 images selected for the 2009 exhibition will remain on display through June 6 in the Mezzanine Gallery of the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts.
