E&H Arts Begins New Year

December 27, 2021

Emory & Henry College’s visual and performing arts program begins the new year with an exhibit by Belgium artist Hedwig Broukaert, who also lives and works in New York City. Broukaert’s art refers to mass media’s distorted messages of desire and identity, transforming the original narrative. In doing this, she reflects on mortality and the vanity of life in the hyper-consumer world of today. Her exhibit, “Peel (America),” runs from Jan. 11 through Feb. 9 at the McGlothlin Center’s Art Gallery. Broukaert presents an Artalk to discuss her work Jan. 17 at 7:30 p.m. in the Kennedy~Reedy Theatre at the McGlothlin Center for the Arts.

There will also be a Faculty Recital with Jessica Spafford, soprano, and Lisa Withers, piano, Friday, Jan. 28 at 7:30 p.m. in the Kennedy~Reedy Theatre. The recital features classic opera arias and art songs in a variety of styles from various historical musical periods.

Save the dates for the upcoming Guest Artist Series performances begin with Music of Connection with Lindsay Kesselman, soprano and Lis Withers, piano Friday, Feb, 25 at 7:30 p.m. On Tuesday, March 1, the John Salmon Jazz Trio from the University of North Carolina - Greensboro School of Music performs. On Tuesday, April 19, Smoky Mountain Brass Quintet returns to bring music ranging from classical to jazz, and patriotic to pop.

The E&H Theater Department presents “Look, We are Breathing,” by Laura Jacqmi, Thursday through Saturday, Feb.17- 19 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 20 at 2 p.m. This thought-provoking play is for mature audiences only and is the directing debut of E&H professor Patrice Foster.
