E&H offers musical and exhibit during October

September 26, 2021

Emory & Henry College, Emory, Virginia, offers two special events during October.

The Emory & Henry College theater department presents a musical that portrays the lives of young people coming of age in the late 19th century.

“Spring Awakening,” a rock musical adaptation of the German classic play by the same name, is presented at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, Oct. 21-23, on the Kennedy-Reedy Stage of the McGlothlin Center for the Arts. It will be staged again Sunday, Oct. 24, at 2 p.m.

The production portrays youths who are maturing into a world where grown ups control their every move but keep them in the dark on their biggest questions about their lives and futures.
The story follows Wendla, Moritz, Melchoir and their friends as they discover their place in the world and the dire consequences to adults who neglect providing their children a broad education about life.
“Spring Awakening” was the winner of eight 2006 Tony Awards, including for Best Musical, and then three more in a 2015 revival. The play is rated “R” by the publisher and is for mature audiences only.

Due to COVID, the McGlothlin Center has limited box office hours. Tickets, which are $15 per person, may be purchased online at ehc.edu/mca/tickets. Seating is limited. Masks are required. Due to the changing conditions surrounding the pandemic, proof of vaccination status or a recent COVID test may also be required.

The landscape paintings of an Emory & Henry College art professor whose images often reflect intense psychological drama are exhibited at the McGlothlin Center Art Gallery through Oct. 23.
Goolsby is transformed and inspired by his surroundings. Drawn by a subconscious affinity to subjects and forms in his world, Goolsby places geometric and organic elements in opposition to develop a sense of tension and anxiety.

His work has been featured in more than 45 solo exhibitions throughout the Southeast and has been selected for regional and national juried exhibitions throughout the United States. His work also is included in a number of public and corporate collections throughout Virginia and North Carolina.
