JOHNSON CITY – East Tennessee State University congratulates two individuals associated with the Department of Music for their success in the 58th annual Grammy Awards, which were presented Feb. 15.
The award for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album was awarded to Snarky Puppy and Metropole Orkest for "Sylva." Jazz trumpeter and pianist Justin Stanton, an ETSU alumnus and Elizabethton native, is a member of Snarky Puppy, an instrumental fusion band based in New York. Metropole Orkest is a jazz and pop orchestra from the Netherlands.
In addition, composer Stephen Paulus was posthumously awarded the Grammy for Best Contemporary Classical Composition for his work, "Prayers and Remembrances." The multi-movement choral and orchestral composition was recorded and released by True Concord Voices and Orchestra on the album "Far in the Heavens: Choral Music of Stephen Paulus.
Dr. Alan Stevens, ETSU associate director of choral activities, performs on the album and was the assistant conductor of True Concord when the piece was commissioned in 2011 for the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.
