As a master printmaker, Welden has collaborated with and printed for many prominent artists. As an artist, he has participated in more than 50 international solo exhibitions in museums and galleries. As an innovator, he developed a printmaking technique called the Solarplate method, has been at the forefront of experiments in non-toxic printmaking, and has been a repeat visitor to Littleton Studios to work in vitreography. He published a book about the Solarplate etching technique with Pauline Muir (Printmaking in the Sun, 2001).
Welden's formal art training was taken at Adelphi University in New York where he received his Master of Arts in 1967, after which he studied at the Academy of Arts in Munich, Germany. From 1977-1985 he was on the faculty of the State University of New York at Stony Brook. Since then he has been an Artist in Residence and Assistant Professor of Art at Central Connecticut State University and a faculty member at Suffolk Community College, Long Island University and Southampton College.
Welden worked as a stone lithographer at Universal Limited Art Editions. In 1972 he founded his own press, Hampton Editions Limited, where he has collaborated on prints with Robert Dash, Willem and Elaine DeKooning, Jimmy Ernst, James Brooks, Dan Flavin, Kurt Vonnegut, Alfonso Ossorio, and others.
