Institute for Faith & Culture welcomes Elissa Yukiko Weichbrodt

August 26, 2024

King University’s Institute for Faith & Culture speaker series, “A Sense of Wonder,” welcomes author and art historian Elissa Yukiko Weichbrodt, Ph.D., to Bristol, Tennessee, Monday, Sept. 9.

Weichbrodt serves as associate professor of art history and is the Norris and Billie Little Endowed Scholar at Covenant College in Lookout Mountain, Georgia. Currently residing in Chattanooga, Tennessee, she regularly writes about the intersection of art, culture and theology and is passionate about the role of art in spiritual formation.

On Monday, Sept. 9, Weichbrodt presents “Very Good: On Making and Being Made” at 9:15 a.m. in the King University Memorial Chapel. That evening at 7 p.m., she presents “Redeeming Vision: Looking at and Learning from Art” at Central Presbyterian Church in Bristol, Virginia. Both events are open to the public and free of charge.

“Jesus tells us in the Gospel of Matthew that ‘if your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light,’” said Martin Dotterweich Ph.D., director of the IFC. “Dr. Weichbrodt reminds us of this important point and encourages us to redeem our vision by viewing art through the lens of love, a process that helps us open ourselves to greater love for God and our neighbors. She has a superb ability to help us perceive in ways we haven’t before, and I’m very excited for our community to take part in her presentations.”

Weichbrodt’s 2023 book, “Redeeming Vision: A Christian Guide to Looking and Learning from Art,” received year-end awards from The Gospel Coalition and Christianity Today. Her additional writings include “A Loving Regard: Contemporary Art and Expanding the Archive,” featured in the collection “Religion and Contemporary Art and Expanding the Archive,” and “Found or Recovered: Competing Views of Paradise in the 19th Century Hawaiian Landscape Painting,” published in Religion and Arts Journal.

She received her bachelor’s degree from Covenant College, and her master’s and doctorate in Art History and Archaeology from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri.

Since 2007, the King University Institute for Faith & Culture has welcomed widely recognized thinkers, authors, musicians, scholars, and philosophers to interact with students and a regional audience in a welcoming environment that catalyzes growth and understanding. The Institute serves as the standard bearer of the university’s long-time exploration of the liberal arts — in conjunction with King’s mission of equipping students to answer the call of excellence inherent in the Christian faith.
