Join the Highlands Youth Ensemble as it presents the annual musical revue, “Le Café Cabaret.” There are two shows: Feb. 4, at 3 p.m. at Milligan University’s Gregory Theatre, Johnson City, Tennessee, and Feb. 5, at 7:30 p.m. at Barter Theatre’s Smith Stage, Abingdon, Virginia.
Director Jane Morison says, “This show is our biggest fundraiser of the year, benefitting all the choirs of the Mountain Empire Children’s Choral Academy, for singers in grades 1-12.
This year’s theme reflects their upcoming tour of France where they perform several concerts including a world premiere of a piece they commissioned to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the D-day landings. Included in the Normandy leg of the tour is a wreath-laying and concert at the American Cemetery.” Morison continues, “We are also performing this spring for local veterans, and we are very humbled to be singing about and for so many heroes!”
In this year’s show enjoy favorites from Broadway, jazz, pop classics and the Great American Songbook, and also get a chance to enjoy or take home some yummy homemade treats for your Valentine.

The Highlands Youth Ensemble was founded by Artistic Director Emerita, Beth Perkinson McCoy in 2002 as an outgrowth of the East Tennessee Children’s Choir. Since its founding, the Highlands Youth Ensemble has performed in Hungary in the International Chamber Choir competition (2006), in Greece at the Festival of the Aegean (2014), in Ireland (2018), and three times at Carnegie Hall (2006, 2010, 2016), including once as a featured ensemble. They were also chosen by audition to perform for the American Choral Directors Association Southern Division Conference (2016). Auditions for the ensemble are held in the summer, and any high school singer from East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia is eligible.
