February 26, 2008

Filled with incredible photographs, many of which have never been seen before, Will Work for Food chronicles the remarkable journey of Barter Theatre throughout its 75-year history.

Beginning with Robert Porterfield's audacious idea to barter food for tickets, the narrative by writer Joe Goodpasture of Abingdon takes the reader through the tenures of Barter's three leaders and highlights their incredible contributions not only to Barter Theatre, but also to the region.

The text was researched by Goodpasture, his wife Ann, and Barter staff members. The book was designed by Hillhouse Graphic Design of Kingsport, Tenn.

This is a story of survival - and triumph - through economic depression, the hardships of war, natural calamity, and the challenges of changing times.

Will Work For Food offers an opportunity to own a piece of Barter history packed with colorful anecdotes, astonishing facts and remarkable images. This limited edition book will thrill those new to Barter's unique story as well as "old-timers" who are sure to learn something new. Look for it in the Barter Theatre gift shops this spring.
