The Poetry Society of Tennessee was established by poets for poets in 1953. The society originated in June 1953, when seven Memphis, Tennessee, poets formed an organization to unite, promote and assist poets of all ages in developing their skills. Over time, the society expanded beyond Memphis to include members from across Tennessee and beyond.
PST operates as a chapter-free organization. The Regional Connections Committee serves to help develop regions and connect people within eight designated regions of Tennessee and one region for out-of-state members. Members are assigned a “home base” region when joining but may participate in any regional activities.
PST holds members-only contests throughout the year. Contests winners receive monetary prizes, and first place poems are published in the society’s anthology,“Tennessee Voices.”
In June 2023, the PST celebrated its 70th anniversary. For more than seven decades, the society has remained dedicated to its mission. The society continues to focus on building community and pursuing excellence in poetry. Visit www.poetrytennessee.org to learn more about PST or if you would like to become a member.
