Sean Sullivan
It is with great sadness that we learned of the death of Sean O'Sullivan on April 23 in New Canaan, Connecticut, at age 95. Sean was a member of the A! Magazine Committee for 10 years. We all remember his great wit, intelligence, wide-ranging interests, analytical mind, kindness and good humor.
Sean came to Abingdon in the 1980s after a long and successful career in television production in New York City. He came to perform in a show at Barter Theatre, fell in love with the community and the theater, and decided to move here with his wife Anne.
Sean was originally from Caribou, Maine, and attended Harvard University, where he was the class orator. He graduated early to enlist in the army in World War II, where he was involved in the encryption program. He spent more than 35 years in television producing and directing, including early television dramas like "The U.S. Steel Hour," and "Dark Shadows." He won a directing Emmy Award and had multiple Emmy nominations.
In coming to Abingdon, Sean got to return to one of his great passions - acting. Many people will remember him for his Barter performances in "Don Juan in Hell" and "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum." He also renewed his interest in writing plays and poetry, and he loved mentoring young people in writing.
Failing health during the last years of his life forced him to move to Connecticut to live with his daughter Anne. A celebration of his life will occur sometime this summer in Abingdon.
