The Southwest Virginia Museum Historical State Park, Big Stone Gap, Virginia, holds its True Art Showcase and Children’s Contest from Sunday, March 1 through Sunday, March 22. The showcase, named for James True, the first curator of the museum, celebrates the works of area artists.
The deadline for submitting art for the showcase is Friday, Feb. 20, by 4 p.m. Due to limited presentation space, limit submission to four pieces per artist and keep the size to 16”x 20” or smaller. For a participation form, email doretha.cole@dcr.virginia.gov or call 276-523-1322. A variety of mediums, such as drawings, photos, paintings, cross stitch and sculptures are welcome, if they fit the size requirements.
The showcase also includes a student art competition reflecting this year’s theme, “Wildlife of the Appalachians.” The art competition is open to students in grades K-12, and entries should portray some aspect of Southwest Virginia’s wildlife and/or natural surroundings. Drawings, photos and paintings are welcome. They request a maximum size of 8.5”x11” and welcome smaller submissions. All entries should be accompanied by the student’s name, school name and grade. Judges consider entries in the following groupings: K-4, 5-8 and 9-12.
All submissions should be received at the museum by Friday, Feb. 20. Winning entries are on display in the museum from March 1 to March 20. Winners in each group receive certificates at a reception held at the museum Sunday, March 15, at 2 p.m. in the Victorian Parlor.
The park is closed during the months of January and February. To make arrangements to drop off artwork or for more information, call the park at 276-523-1322.
