JOHNSON CITY, TN – The 2010 summer issue of Now & Then: The Appalachian Magazine has been published by the Center for Appalachian Studies and Services at East Tennessee State University.
The theme of the new issue is "Appalachian High." Writers explore such topics as prescription drug abuse in the region, jumping off the New River Gorge Bridge in West Virginia, efforts to rescue raptors in North Carolina, and eating "high on the hog" in Alabama. The 72-page issue also features a modern-day Jack-and-the-Beanstalk parable by Kentucky farmer Bill Best, a visit to the Beer Wash in Roan Mountain, and a profile of the first popularly-elected woman mayor in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
"Appalachian high and Appalachian low and everything in between comprise the Appalachian experience, which is not merely dual or oppositional but inclusive," writes Dr. Roberta Herrin, director of CASS, in the magazine's introduction.
