The Symphony of the Mountains presents a deeply moving and collaborative concert, “Show Me the Paths,” on Sunday, May 17 at 3 p.m. at the ETSU Martin Center for the Arts. Blending orchestral richness with the storytelling of the internationally acclaimed Kruger Brothers along with American folk songwriter Si Kahn, plus stories presented by Lee Eskey, this performance promises an experience that is as emotionally resonant as it is musically compelling.
“Show Me the Paths” is part of the Symphony’s Paths to Dignity initiative, which welcomes individuals experiencing homelessness into shared musical experiences, offering moments of reflection, dignity and belonging. In the three weeks leading up to the concert, that outreach will extend directly into the community, with small chamber groups presenting 13 mini-concerts in local shelters across the Tri-Cities.
This concert brings that mission full circle.
The Kruger Brothers are widely recognized for their innovative blend of bluegrass, folk and classical traditions. Born in Switzerland and based in North Carolina, their work is deeply rooted in storytelling shaped by personal experience. Drawing from their own early hardships where they experienced periods without a stable home, they will share spoken reflections that flow seamlessly into the music, creating an intimate dialogue between story and song.
The symphony opens with one of Edward Elgar’s most beloved works, “Nimrod” from the “Enigma Variations” — a richly expressive and deeply moving piece that draws on the full palette of orchestral color. Then the Symphony of the Mountains is joined by The Kruger Brothers. This collaboration blends the grandeur of symphonic tradition with the intimacy of bluegrass, creating a cross-genre experience that feels both expansive and profoundly personal.
One of the program’s most poignant moments is the premiere of “Here Is My Home,” co-written by Jens Kruger and Si Kahn. Featuring the symphony alongside Voices of the Mountains —joined by special guest participants — this work offers a powerful reflection on belonging. For those who feel unmoored, the song reminds us that home can be found in connection. When voices unite, music creates a space where all are welcomed and dignity is affirmed, underscoring the Symphony’s commitment to community and shared humanity.
The ETSU Martin Center for the Arts provides an ideal setting for this performance, with acoustics that support both intimacy and grandeur. Audiences can expect an afternoon that moves fluidly between spoken word, song, and sweeping orchestral passages—moments of quiet reflection giving way to powerful musical climaxes.
At its core, “Show Me the Paths” asks a simple but meaningful question: What does it mean to truly be welcomed home?
Through music, memory, and shared humanity, the Symphony of the Mountains and The Kruger Brothers invite the community to explore that question together.
This concert is sponsored by Bravissima! The premiere of “Here Is My Home” is made possible through the generous support of Ty & Julann Warren and John & Karen Vann.
