Symphony of the Mountains presents two November concerts showcasing both the explosive energy of percussion and a heartfelt tribute to our nation’s veterans featuring Voices of the Mountains. These performances exemplify Symphony of the Mountains’ commitment to making world-class music accessible and meaningful for the entire community.
Under the baton of guest conductor Jesse Henkensiefken, “Rhythm and Renewal” puts percussion where it belongs—right in the spotlight. SOTM’s talented Percussion Quartet takes center stage alongside the full orchestra in this high-energy evening that ignites the stage with dynamic rhythms and explosive sound.
The concert features Ottorino Respighi’s “Gli Uccelli” (“The Birds”). This is a charming suite that captures the delicate beauty of birdsong through masterful orchestration. It is followed by Viet Cuong’s “Re(new)al Concerto for Percussion Quartet and Orchestra.” This cutting-edge contemporary work perfectly blends rhythmic intensity with the full richness of the orchestra. It is performed by the SOTM percussion quartet, Cassidy Lester, Matthew Geiger, Michael Lester and Christian Swafford. The concert closes with Igor Stravinsky’s “Firebird Suite.” The fiery brilliance of one of the 20th century’s most iconic orchestral works. Stravinsky’s legendary score blends vivid Russian folklore with revolutionary orchestration, building from mysterious forest scenes to an explosive ending.
The concert is Saturday, Nov. 1 at 7 p.m., in the Toy F. Reid Eastman Employee Center, Kingsport, Tennessee. Tickets are $40; students and children are free.
“A Salute to Service” is a heartfelt musical tribute honoring our nation’s veterans. This special outdoor performance features the soaring harmonies of Voices of the Mountains and the stirring sounds of the SOTM Brass Quintet, performing patriotic favorites, uplifting choral works and musical tributes to those who have served and sacrificed for our country.
Joining the symphony for this performance is the Virginia Highlands Community College Concert Choir, directed by Ryan D. Whittington, adding their voices to this powerful celebration of service.
The concert is Sunday, Nov. 9 at 3 p.m., at Kingsport Farmers Market, Kingsport, Tennessee. Tickets are free. Whether you’re drawn to the excitement of cutting-edge percussion or the heartfelt tribute to our veterans, you’ll experience the power of music to bring us together.
