Ehlbeck Exhibition opens at MCA Gallery

An exhibition by artist Michael Ehlbeck Feb. 13 through March 11 at the McGlothlin Center Art Gallery at Emory & Henry College, Emory, Virginia, explores subject matter that includes landscapes, cityscapes and family.

The exhibition opens with a Feb. 13 Artalk, which begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Kennedy-Reedy Theatre of the McGlothlin Center for the Arts. This event and the exhibition are free and open to the public.

While the land and cityscapes document aspects of Ehlbeck’s travels, the objects serve as a starting point and evolve without preconceived solutions and outcomes, “a one-person exquisite corpse, so to speak,” says the artist.

The family images mainly pay tribute to Ehlbeck’s departed mother and father, not as traditional portraits, but as assemblages of fragmented memories.

Stafford, Withers present ‘All the Things We Are’

Two Emory & Henry College music professors acclaimed for their versatility and performance style present a recital that spans languages, cultures and stylistic eras Feb. 9 at the McGlothlin Center for the Arts.

Dr. Jessica Spafford, soprano, and Dr. Lisa Withers, pianist, explore texts and topics that are unique but ubiquitous during this recital, “All the Things We Are,” which begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Kennedy-Reedy Theatre of the McGlothlin Center for the Arts.

The two artists incorporate different sounds and textures to bring to life music by Whitacre, Villa-lobos, Tailleferre, Kern and others.

Tickets for the event are available online at www.ehc.edu/mca/tickets or by calling 276-944-6333.
