Knoxville Children’s Theatre, in partnership with the Clayton Foundation presents a live production of “The Scarlet Letter.” The play is based on the famous novel by Nathaniel Hawthorne. This production brings the story to life on stage for teens so they appreciate and better understand the writing of Nathaniel Hawthorne. The play is performed Oct. 29through Nov. 14, Thursdays and Fridays at 7 p.m., Saturdays at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m., and Sundays at 3 p.m.. ?
Hester Prynne has committed aninexcusable crime and has confounded herprosecutors by refusing to name her partner in sin. But the man who allows her to protect him suffers more from pangs of conscience than he would have from public humiliation. The climax shows the timeless truth that compassion and understanding are forever more powerful than vengeance and cruelty.
The play is performed by 20 young actors from ages 10 to 18. Hester isplayed by KCT veteran Maddy Grace Payne, with Arthur Dimmesdale played by Henry Lubke. Roger Chillingworth is played by Grant Trivette, while Ethan Anderson plays John Wilson. Acting the role of Pearl is 10-year-old Maggie McNally. Governor Bellingham isportrayed by PJ Copeland. The housewives for this production areplayed by Averi Waller, Grace Durham, Piper Green, Parker Bookmyerand Macy Moon. Mistress Hibbinsisplayed by Ava Bradshaw with Truman Ball playing Beadle. They are joined by KCT veterans Eason Bullard, Cooper Delamain, Maxwelll Hill, Aubree Jonesand Tiger Ladaa. Piper Greene, Parker Bookmyer, Emma Reagan, and Cloe Mortenson are making their KCT debuts in this production.
This show marks the KCT directorial debut of new Artistic Director Steve Sherman. He is assisted by student intern Alyssa Vogt. The play is designed by young student designers from ages 12 to 16. Lighting designer for this production is Harper Miller. Providing scenic design are co-designers Tanner White and Alex Montgomery with assistance from Maggie Clower. Charlotte Chrimes and Lauren Norton with assistance from Evie Braudedesign and build the costumes for this production. The properties master is Samantha Owens with assistance from Braelyn Read and Caroline Alley. The play’s stage manager is Lydia Baxter.
