"House Divided" by Virginia Derryberry

ETSU Department of Art & Design and Slocumb Galleries in partnership with Jerry’s Artarama of Knoxville presentPositive/Negative 40 National Juried Art Exhibition.
Juried by Nandini Makrandi, chief curator, Hunter Museum of American Art. The exhibition features 40 contemporary American artists whose innovative work spark critical conversation and reflection. The Juror’s Lecture and announcement of winners during closing reception is March 12from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Ball Hall Auditorium adjacent to the Slocumb Galleries.
The juror described the works of the 40 participating artists “present compelling discourse on the pressing issues of contemporary life” are Daniel Atyim, Amal Azzam, Emma Barlow, Gary Barton, Aaron Bernard, Jenna Casey, Claudia Crisan Calabria, Jack De Graffenried, Matthew Derezinski, Virginia Derryberry, Alexander Diaz, Morgan Ford Willingham, Maryam Ghasempour Siahgaldeh, Victoria Goro-Rapoport, Jason Guynes, Lucy Julia Hale, Frank Hamrick, Jean Hess, Jason John, Anna Kenar, Lisa Klakulak, Brian Kreydatus, Lily Martina Lee, Eric Lubrick, Christopher Luper, Beauvais Lyons, Lynne Marinelli Ghenov, Pippi Miller, Cindy Morefield, Jeff Murphy, Nick Pollok, Nell Ruby, Katie Simmons, Eric Standley, Jeff Stevenson, Steven Subotnick, Ernesto Trujillo, David Underwood, Catherine Walker andSarah Williams.
Juror Nandini Makrandi described part of the jurying process and noted the diversity of “media and subject matter from intricately detailed drawings and collages to layered abstractions, sculptural constructions to video and photography, with traditional techniques pushed into experimental and innovative spaces.” She elaborated that the “works are relevant and engaging, combining personal visions with universal concerns, with the themes addressed in this exhibition range from biculturalism and immigration to the inundation by media, the challenges of our aging bodies, environmental change and more.”
Exhibition runs through March 14at Slocumb Galleries. The Slocumb Galleries are located at Ernest C. Ball Hall, 232 Sherrod Drive, ETSU campus, Johnson City, Tennessee. Viewing hours are Mondays thru Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with extended hours on receptions and by appointments.
