BRISTOL, TN --The pitch, quaffle, bludger and golden snitch might have been created as part of a fairy – uh, make that wizard – tale. But the minds of the Junior Civitan Club at Tennessee High School found a way to take the game of Quidditch off the pages of a Harry Potter novel and set it on the Rotary Field behind the King Pharmaceuticals building.
Wednesday's Mountain Empire Quidditch Cup was the second annual match, and the Junior Civitan Club garnered a few donations from the public for their creative broomstick "flying" performances.
Club members also deserve their own Triwizard Cup for finding a way to stay as true as possible to author J.K. Rowling's game.
On broomsticks they ran, "flying" across the field while chasing a small self-propelled golden ball (the golden snitch, played by yellow-shirted club members) and sending the quaffle (a football) through an elevated ring for team points. Of course, that is, if they didn't get knocked off their broomsticks by a bludger (a slightly deflated soccer balls.)
And they say kids today are lost without a PS3, PSP, Wii, or XBox in hand.
Not so for the Junior Civitan.
