A Weekend With Dr. Alice Parker: Choral and Vocal Workshops

The Mountain Empire Children's Choral Academy, in conjunction with First Presbyterian Church- Bristol, TN, and King College, Bristol, TN, is hosting renowned Dr. Alice Parker of Melodious Accord, Inc., for a weekend of choral and vocal workshops, concerts with comments, lunch with Dr. Parker and a SING! Composer, conductor and teacher, Alice Parker received her master's degree from Juilliard School. Her arrangements with Robert Shaw of folksongs, hymns and spirituals form an enduring repertoire. She has been commissioned by Chanticleer and the Atlanta Symphony Chorus and in 1985, founded Melodious Accord, Inc., which presents choral concerts and sponsors her workshops. Shaw said of Parker that "..she possesses a rare and creative musical intelligence."

Schedule of Events:

Friday evening, April 13, 2007, a concert will be given by the MECCA choirs, First Presbyterian Sanctuary Choir and King College's Symphony Choir with Dr. Parker interacting with each group. This is open to the public. $10.00 for Adults and $5.00 for students.

Saturday, April 14, will be an all day event, beginning at 9:00 a.m. with workshops in the King College Chapel. This is open to composers, singers and townsfolk. Dr. Parker will talk about her thoughts on Melody and Performance Practice.

One of the highlights of this workshop will be lunch with Dr. Parker. This will be at 12 noon in the King College Dining Hall. She will informally talk about her life and work. A display area will also be available during breaks where Mrs. Parker's books, CDs and other music may be purchased.

The Saturday afternoon session, beginning at 1:30, will include singing through some of her compositions with comments about how they were conceived and how to study and perform her work. This is also in KC Chapel.

On Sunday, April 15, everyone is graciously invited to attend Bristol's First Presbyterian Church's 11:00 a.m. worship service where Dr. Parker will lead the congregation in hymn singing.
