Abingdon Main Street launches crowd-funding campaign for downtown mural

May 20, 2014

Abingdon Main Street, Inc., a designated Virginia Main Street program, has initiated an online crowd funding campaign in support of its downtown mural project.

After extensive research, artist Ellen Elmes, began painting the 15 x 45 foot mural in July 2013, and is scheduled to complete it this summer. Abingdon Main Street needs approximately $10,000 to finish the project and has set a goal to raise half of those funds through an online campaign that gives perks to donors based on the amount of their contributions.

"There are seven levels of giving, anywhere from $25 to $2,500," says Susan Howard, executive director of Abingdon Main Street. "The perks include getting your name painted in the mural border, a social with the artist and much more. People have loved seeing the mural's progress, and we're appealing to the public to help us finish it." The mural features six banners that appear to wave in the breeze. Each banner is filled with images reflective of Abingdon's cultural and social history as a community.
