The McGlothlin Center for the Arts, on the Emory & Henry campus, Emory, Virginia, brings audiences a wide range of performances and exhibitions for its 2021-22 season that continue its tradition of providing quality, unique artistic endeavor that has both emotional and intellectual impact.

The McGlothlin Center is providing public events after a year’s hiatus in the midst of the COVID 19 pandemic. Seating may be limited for some events, however, as threats from the virus continue to linger and as Emory & Henry College continues to evaluate guidelines for public gatherings.

“We look forward to resuming our schedule of high-quality programming that increasingly distinguishes the McGlothlin Center as a premier venue for the arts in the region,” said Dirk Moore, executive director of the Center. “We are, however, mindful of the need to provide a safe environment for our many valued arts patrons who are helping us to continue this tradition of arts excellence.”

Events this fall include Air Play, a circus-style adventure of performers who journey through a surreal world of air and movement, transforming ordinary objects into uncommon beauty. The performance is held Saturday, Oct. 29 at 7:30 p.m. on the Kennedy-Reedy Stage.

Monday, Nov. 15, the McGlothlin Center hosts Cantus, a men’s vocal ensemble that is widely known for its trademark warmth and blend, innovative programming and riveting performances of music, ranging from the Renaissance to the 21st century. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m.

The Symphony of the Mountains helps the McGlothlin Center celebrate Christmas with a Dec. 5 concert, “By the Fireside,” which begins at 3 p.m.

Other events during the 2021-22 season include a performance of the rock musical “Spring Awakening.” Set in late 19th-century Germany, the musical tells the story of teenagers discovering the inner and outer tumult of adolescent sexuality. Performances are held in the Kennedy-Reedy Theatre Oct. 21-23 at 7:30 p.m. and Oct. 24 at 2 p.m.

The McGlothlin Center Art Gallery has announced its lineup of artists for the fall. They include Richard Whitten, whose paintings are on exhibit through Sept. 18; Charles Goolsby, an E&H professor of art whose work is displayed from Sept. 27 to Oct. 23; and Greg Banks, who provides an exhibition of surrealistic imagery from Nov. 1 to Nov. 27.

Looking ahead to the spring, the McGlothlin Center hosts the Salmon Jazz Trio March 1 beginning at 7:30 p.m. This group has thrilled audiences both in the United States and abroad. John Salmon is a renowned classical and jazz pianist whose recording are broadcast regularly through the world.
